The very common lip seal is designed to retain lubricants or liquids, exclude contaminants, separate fluids, and confine pressure. The standard seal design includes a “case” or shell with a sealing lip bonded to it. The sealing lip is many times held in position against the dynamic shaft with a garter spring. Generally, spring-loaded lips are for retaining oil and non-spring-loaded are for low-speed grease retention or excluding contaminants.
